Chapter Eleven
âThis must be the house Addison grew up in,â Detective Edwin Myers said as he checked the address against his notes. âThere have been officers here already, but it was last night and nobody was home. I donât see any cars in the driveway, so itâs probably still empty. Why donât we have a look around while we wait for the search warrants.â
SAC Don Olsen had assigned a pair of agents to get search warrants for Addisonâs home, his dorm room, and even the lab in the engineering department on campus where heâd done some work. They expected the warrants to be ready in less than an hour now. In the meantime, they were simply watching the house in case he came back.
âActually, letâs wait down the street a ways,â Stu countered as he drove past. âIf there happens to be anybody there, we donât want to spook them.â
Edwin nodded. âI guess youâre right.â
From where they were sitting, the officers looked the house and yard over. It was in Whittier, an older neighborhood of the city. The houses on both sides of the streets were old. Some were in need of repair and paint, others looked very well cared for, and the rest were somewhere in between. The white frame house where Addisonâs parents lived was shabby and run-down, one of the worst on the block. The front lawn was brown for lack of water and was overrun with weeds. The sidewalk that led to the front door was cracked, with weeds growing through. What they could see of the small backyard was just as bad as the front.
It wasnât long before the other agents arrived with the approved warrants. Four more officersâtwo from Long Beach and two from Whittierâjoined them. Stu took charge and made assignments. Then Edwin and Stu approached the front door while the others fanned outâthree to the back, the others staying on the streetâwatching for any suspicious activity in the neighborhood and for the return of Addison or his parents.
Knowing how Lexusâs friend Shaun Goltz and the two professors from the university had been killed, all the officers were nervous and watchful. Guns and knives they were used to, but deadly remote control bees were new. One of the dangerous little drones could pop up anywhere, and the officers had to be able to swat them out of the air. If anyone did get stung, Stu carried the antidote. He had explained how it worked and handed each of them a loaded syringe. âIf someone gets stung, someone else is going to have to give him a shot of this as quickly as possible. When weâre finished here, Iâll collect the syringes,â Stu said. The presence of the antidote relieved some of the tension, and everyone indicated his readiness to begin the search.
The men were all equipped with radios so they could communicate throughout the operation. Everyone had small mikes attached to their lapels and small triggers to activate them. Stu spoke softly into his, asking if the officers in the back were in position.
